The new lockdown tier system was introduced this afternoon by Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he addressed the House of Commons. The new tiers are divided into three categories, all of which have different meanings. Tier one translates to a “medium” risk level, while tier two means “high” risk and tier three is “very high”. The rules relating to each tier and area of the country will come into effect this week.

What tier is Manchester in?

People in Greater Manchester will once again be able to mix with other households in outdoor settings after being placed into tier two of the new system.

Millions breathed a sigh of relief after Manchester avoided the fate of Liverpool, which was placed into tier three immediately.

Being in tier two means restrictions will largely remain the same for the Northern city, meaning households meeting indoors is still banned.

Social gatherings have been banned since July 31 when extra restrictions were placed on Greater Manchester amid increasing rates of coronavirus.

“We will have a simplified set of rules: no social mixing in any indoor settings, rule of six in public outdoor settings; tougher enforcement for non-Covid secure businesses and hospitality remains open.”

It is understood that Manchester’s placement into tier two is not guaranteed and is subject to change at any time if coronavirus numbers don’t decrease.

The Government said local leaders will help determine whether other venues should close down, such as gyms and casinos.

Schools, non-essential retail and universities will remain open nationwide regardless of the tier level.
