Prominent Remain campaigner Amber Rudd said around 40 MPs would oppose a more basic free trade deal based on that between the European Union and Canada.

Such an arrangement is championed by leading Brexiteer Tories who say the deal hammered out at Mrs May’s official country residence of Chequers in July will leave Britain a “vassal state” tied to Brussels rules it has no say over.
