Tracy allowed daughter, Elsie, to have a quick ride in the car park of the Green Parrot pub down the road from where they live. Tracy was dropping her van off for an MOT and thought nothing of stopping in the unused car park.

After only being there for half an hour, she was hit with a £75 fine from Euro Car Parks for not paying for a ticket. The JD Wetherspoon pub has been closed for months due to the lockdown.

Both Tracy and her husband lost their jobs due to the pandemic and she said that she was struggling to afford the MOT as it was.

She told Cornwall Live: “It is absolutely disgusting. There is nowhere safe in Perranporth for Elsie to go bike riding and we are not allowed to travel to any of the wooded bike parks we normally use. “The car park is an ideal safe place while it was unused.

“I think it is absolutely disgusting in these current times. There is nowhere to go, nothing to do, we have no jobs and can only go out from our doorstep and now we are being penalised for trying to give our daughter some exercise on her bike.

Advice on the Which? website has outlined how best to avoid a parking ticket:

  • You can stop on double yellow lines as long as you don’t leave your car unattended or stay for an unreasonable length of time.
  • Do not wait or stop at a bus stop
  • Park your vehicle wholly on the road. It may seem conscientious to park with half your car on the pavement but traffic wardens may not see it this way
  • Be sure to check pay-and-display and permit holder bays road markings
  • If you are not sure whether you can park there and can’t find a parking warden, it’s best not to risk it
