The warning comes from WHO special envoy Dr David Nabarro, who spoke to Sky News on Friday after it was revealed Britons will be allowed to see their families over the festive period. Boris Johnson has agreed with the devolved nations that families can mix in bubbles between the days of 23-27 December this year. But the move has been criticised by Dr Nabarro

Speaking to Sky News he said: “The most dangerous time in these disease outbreaks is just when the numbers are coming down.

“We all relax. We think we have done the job. And so we let the virus come back.

“And then, lo and behold, within a very short time, the numbers are picking up again.

“We have got to be careful. We have got to be really respectful of the virus, especially with Christmas coming up.

Please, everybody, remember the virus does not respect our holidays.”

He went on to warn of a “huge surge” in cases and a potential third lockdown, which would bring “more economic misery and despair”.

He said: “Let’s try to avoid that.”
