Mr Johnson is due to announce on Thursday which tier different parts of the country will be put in.

It is thought that only a small number of mostly rural places will immediately move into Tier 1 after lockdown.

This will include areas such as Cornwall, Suffolk, Dorset, Devon, the Isle of Wight and parts of the Home Counties.

According to the latest data, areas with the highest rates of covid include Hull, Swales and Thanet in Kent.

The areas with the largest week-on-week rise in rates were in Kent, with Medway recording the highest number of new cases.

Areas across the North West and Yorkshire and the Humber still have many areas with a high number of cases per 100,000 people in the last seven days.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said he expects London to return to Tier 2.

However, some reports claim Downing Street is not ruling out Tier 3 measures in the capital as cases, while comparatively low, are rising not falling.
