Mr Cameron revealed he held the fort at home and spent a couple of days a week volunteering. He told Times Radio: “I was at our house in Oxfordshire with my wife and children. My wife was battling hard to save and promote her fashion business, I was working less than that. And so I cooked all the meals. I do my best to keep the place provisioned, a bit of home-schooling but that wasn’t my strong point.

“And I worked for the Chipping Norton Food Bank actually one or two days a week, which was great to do something to help people who were really isolated and stuck at home.”

Mr Cameron toured the radio studios yesterday to promote the paperback publication of his own book, For the Record.

But the ex-PM admitted he has been left red-faced by the explosive political memoir published by a friend.

The blisteringly indiscreet journal kept by Sasha Swire, a member of his trusted circle, details the political feuds and friendships that dominated the former Prime Minister’s time in No 10.

Lady Swire, the wife of the ex-MP Sir Hugo Swire, claims the ex-premier joked that her perfume made him want to push her “into the bushes and give you one”.

She writes that Mr Cameron “talks a lot about sex” and suggests he is typical of a certain type of Englishman who become “lewd” because they “no longer knows how to flirt” as they are “terrified of causing offence”.

Diary of an MP’s Wife includes unflattering stories about all the major figures linked to Mr Cameron, including George Osborne, Michael Gove and his wife Sarah Vine, as well as current PM Boris Johnson.

Newspaper columnist Miss Vine said associates of the former PM have described the book as “an act of social suicide”.

Lady Swire, the daughter of former defence secretary Sir John Nott, insisted she had never intended to publish the diaries when she was writing but decided later to go ahead because “it is always men who write history”.

Asked about the claims he talked about taking Lady Swire into the bushes, he told Times Radio: “I don’t recall that conversation … if someone wrote down all your banter in private over the years, there probably might be a few bits and pieces that weren’t very flattering.”

Mr Cameron added: “Look, of course, it’s kind of … it’s embarrassing when you have things you say in private and do in private, sort of splashed all over the place, and of course you’d rather that didn’t happen.

“I suppose the truth is that if you want respect for your privacy and people not questioning your character and private life and all the rest of it, then politics probably isn’t the career for you.”

Mr Cameron revealed he occasionally exchanges messages with Mr Johnson and urged him to take Jeremy Hunt, who challenged him for the leadership, back into the Cabinet.

In a swipe at the PM, the ex-premier said he “didn’t fear the tall poppies” during his time in No 10.

Mr Cameron also lashed out at US president Donald Trump, saying he “drives him mad” a lot of the time.
