When are face coverings currently mandatory?

Face coverings are compulsory for anyone travelling on public transport across the UK.

Passengers are also required to wear masks at transport hubs and when boarding aircraft in England, Scotland and Wales.

In addition, face coverings must be worn in shops, supermarkets and shopping centres around the UK.

Shop workers however were not required to wear masks.

In England and Scotland, face coverings are also compulsory in a number of indoor spaces including:

  • Banks, building societies and post offices
  • Places of worship
  • Museums, galleries and entertainment venues
  • Libraries and public reading rooms.
