The Duchess of Cambridge, 39, is not interested in shooting or horses like the rest of the Royal Family. Royal expert Tom Quinn has revealed that Camilla was not “keen” on Kate because of the gap in her interests. He told the Channel 5 documentary, When the Middletons met the Monarchy, that Prince William would “feel the gap”.

Mr Quinn said: “I’d heard that Camilla wasn’t very keen on Catherine.

“She didn’t shoot, she wasn’t very interested in horses particularly.

“There was too much of a gap and William would feel it.

“But I think it’s true to say that Camilla later warmed to Catherine and recognised her solid virtues.”

Kate and William began dating in 2003 while studying at the University of St Andrews but their relationship flourished when the couple spent time together at Balmoral Castle.

According to the Channel 5 documentary Secrets of Royal palaces, the Cambridges had guaranteed privacy. Royal expert Penny Junor explained what the couple had while there.

Ms Junor said: “There is an enormous freedom.”

Narrator Glynis Barber said: “It’s the one palace they can almost guarantee privacy which is probably why so many royal relationships have blossomed there.

Royal expert Ingrid Seward added: “When you stay in one of the royal residences, there’s a lot of pressure to try and get it right.”

The revelation comes as the Queen enforced a number of “strict” rules on William while he was at university.

The Queen, 94, told William he could not smoke, do drugs or discuss his family with classmates.

The Duke of Cambridge broke a 150-year-old tradition which had seen members of the Royal Family go to either the University of Oxford or Cambridge.
