Kate Middleton and Prince William have stepped their royal security in recent days, sparking a frenzy of speculation from royal observers. The reasons behind the built up security has now been revealed, according to ITV News Royal Editor Chris Ship and Producer Lizzie Robinson. Discussing the recent straightened security detail, Ship and Robinson said the decision had been made in relation to protecting the public from the spread of coronavirus.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited London this week, meeting people at London Bridge Jobcentre, the London Muslim Centre and the East London Mosque as well as Beigel Bake on London’s Brick Lane.

Most of these engagements took place in Tower Hamlets, although the first took place in Southwark.

While at the famous Beigel Bake store, the couple heard about how the business worked during the pandemic and how the reduction in hours had affected staff members.

The couple even had a chance to knead some dough in the bakery’s kitchen.

However, Ship explained the reason for the secrecy around the visit: “One of the reasons we can’t tell you about things that are coming up, even when we know about them, is because of the continuing issue of coronavirus.

“The royals always attract a crowd, no matter where they go, so if they announce any visit, then they would worry about the number in the crowds and social distancing implications.”

Robinson added: “People had actually that realised Kate and William were in the bakery in Brick Lane this week.

“A crowd did gather outside – that’s the nature of them. It would have been worse if they had been pre-announcement.

“I can’t see us being able to announce any visit in advance for the foreseeable future, really.”

Kate and William returned to their London home of Kensington Palace earlier this month.

The couple’s eldest two children, seven-year-old Prince George and five-year-old Princess Charlotte, have since returned to school at St Thomas’s Battersea

Earlier this week, the photography project that the Duchess launched with the National Portrait Gallery went live as even the Queen praised the entrants.
