The Duke and the Duchess of Sussex were cautioned there was “no way back to official duties”, royal sources told the Daily Mail. The warning comes after it emerged the couple have confirmed a TV interview with American talk show host and producer Oprah Winfrey.

An announcement confirmed Meghan has agreed to an “intimate” and “wide-ranging” interview with Ms Winfrey.

One source told the newspaper the interview was “one of the most inevitable and, sadly, predictable consequences” of Megxit.

The couple were set to return to the UK to face the Queen and other senior royals in the so-called “Megxit review”, where their roles within the Royal Family will be defined.

A royal source told the Daily Mail that the Sussexes were no longer working members of the Royal Family, and therefore any choices made regarding “media commitments are matters for them”.

They added Harry and Meghan were “under no obligation” to discuss their decision with Palace.

Another source who spoke to the news outlet said there were hopes the TV special would give the Sussexes the opportunity to “get whatever it is they want to say off their chests and move on”.

Another source said: “The interview has clearly come about because there is an understanding [with Harry and Meghan] that all remaining formal links with organisations will cease to exist.”

The 90-minute programme will air on CBS on March 7.
