The bombshell biography, Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, was written by veteran royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand. The book was created with the with an aim of “rehumanising” two people who some believe have been misrepresented.
Mr Scobie, a royal correspondent for ABC has revealed Meghan Markle’s final words to him.
The royal author claimed Meghan told him: “It didn’t have to be this way.”
He wrote: “Staff who had been with the couple from day one were mourning the end of what was supposed to be a happy story: two people fall in love, get married, have a baby, serve the Queen, the end.”
However, things couldn’t have turned out more different.

Instead, the Sussexes chose to step back as senior members of the Royal Family, pursuing their own income and no longer carrying out any official engagements on behalf of the Crown.
In Finding Freedom, readers get a fully chronicled account of the couple’s relationship, from their first date at Soho House London.
Mr Scobie said: “I think the really unique situation that we found ourselves in was that a lot of the people close to Harry and Meghan—friends and people that they’ve worked with in the past and present—often felt that the characters being developed on the pages of the British tabloids were very different to the people that they knew.”

“It was through our conversations with many of these sources and of course our own back reporting that we were able to bring these stories to light.”
The book also explores concepts of racism sexism and misogyny when it comes to the treatment of Meghan.
The author said not having Meghan’s time in the Royal Family work out was a “missed opportunity”.
He added: “It’s such a missed opportunity.

“Because for the Royal Family to truly modernise, they have to represent modern society.
“And that’s a diverse society.
“And Meghan presented this golden opportunity to step forward into a new era.
“It was one of the big conversations around the time of the wedding. But it’s amazing how quickly the excitement for that disappeared.”

According to the authors, both the lack of support by the Royal Family and the treatment of the press ultimately led to the couple’s unhappiness.
“They felt very unsupported within the institution of the monarchy.
“And it left them very vulnerable because, of course, those words stuck.
“They caused great damage.

“And I think it really is why they are such a polarising couple to this day.”
Addressing the storylines that the duchess was difficult to work with or high maintenance within the monarchy, Mr Scobie and Ms Durand said leaks to the there were a number of leaks that came from royal courtiers within the palace.
“I think the problems really came from the opinions and views of the old guard who found Meghan’s way of doing things perhaps a little brash or a bit too different from a very traditional institution.
“And maybe that came across as a lack of respect for that tradition—I have heard that in commentary over the years. But unfortunately, it does come down to a sort of culture clash and maybe a tinge of xenophobia.”
