Matt Cardle, winner of The X Factor in 2010, said he exchanged messages with the future Duchess in 2015. The conversation began after Meghan followed Mr Cardle on social media.
He had just completed a highly successful appearance in Memphis at the West End.
Speaking to the Sun on Sunday Mr Cardle said: “It was just a very weird situation — very odd.
“And I really don’t know how it came about.
“Life’s got a course and I was not on that one.
“Laughed about it, but it’s amazing thinking back.”
Mr Cardle met his current partner, Amber Hernaman, before any date could be arranged with Meghan.
The former builder defeated One Direction to take The X Factor 2010 crown.
He went on to sell a million copies of ‘When We Collide’, his first single.

“Cause if he wasn’t kind, it just didn’t seem like it would make sense.
“We met for a drink.
“Then I think very quickly into that we said, ‘Well what are we doing tomorrow? We should meet again’.”
During the same interview Harry claimed he was immediately smitten with Meghan.
Asked at what point he knew Meghan was “the one” he replied: “The very first time we met.”
Just weeks after their first meeting Harry persuaded Meghan to accompany him on a trip to Africa.
He explained: “I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana and we camped out with each other under the stars.
“Then we were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to get to know each other.”
Meghan and Harry were married in May 2018 at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel.
However in January of this year they caused a global sensation by announcing their intention to step down as senior members of the Royal Family and are currently living in California.
