Meghan’s snubbed phone call to Mr Haig took place in September 2019. The former Duchess of Sussex was guest editing that months edition of British Vogue, and called Mr Haig to tell him she had personally selected one of his works for the magazine. It comes as Finding Freedom, a new tell-all biography about Meghan and Prince Harry’s exit from the Royal Family, revealed her potential career in writing.

Mr Haig said in an interview he was unaware Meghan would be calling him.

He claimed he received a phone call from somebody at British Vogue, and was not in the mood for a conversation.

He said: “I was not in work mode, the last thing I wanted to do was have a serious conversation with a journalist. I just wanted to go in the swimming pool.”

When Mr Haig realised the next day that Meghan had been calling to thank him for his poem, he admitted he “probably should have picked up the phone”.

British Vogue’s September issue is traditionally its most important of the year, with this years emphasising activism.

Meghan’s 2019 issue was titled Forces for Change, and highlighted female activists and role models.

She said of editing the magazine: “These last seven months have been a rewarding process, curating and collaborating with Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s editor-in-chief, to take the year’s most-read fashion issue and steer its focus to the values, causes and people making impact in the world today.

“Through this lens I hope you’ll feel the strength of the collective in the diverse selection of women chosen for the cover as well as the team of support I called upon within the issue to help bring this to light.”

Before marrying Harry, Meghan ran a lifestyle blog called The Tig.

Her lifestyle blog was started in 2014 and contained fashion choices, interviews with celebrity friends and recipes for dishes.

Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, co-authors of Finding Freedom, wrote that the blog was “curated eye candy that she hoped would be the ‘breeding ground for ideas and excitement – for an inspired lifestyle’”.

Meghan was also rumoured to be the author behind The Working Actress, an anonymous blog ran from 2010 to 2012 about people trying to become famous.

Finding Freedom also suggested that Meghan “thought about becoming a journalist” before acting.

Mr Scobie and Ms Durand wrote that the former Duchess “enjoyed writing in school” and wanted to pursue it as a career.

They added: “She had always enjoyed writing in school and even thought about becoming a journalist at one point, as it was an opportunity to channel her creativity and frustration.”

Meghan and Harry have distanced themselves from Finding Freedom, and a spokesperson added it is based on the authors own experiences and interviews.

Meghan and Harry left the Royal Family on March 31, and are now living in Los Angeles.

Since moving to the US, Meghan has taken on roles as a public speaker in video.

She is also scheduled to interview Emily Ramshaw, founder and CEO of the 19th newsroom, a publication launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, on August 19.

Meghan said of the interview it has “never been more important” to boost people who are “often underrepresented in the media”.
