Speaking to Express.co.uk, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said the Duchess of Sussex’s connections, character and interest in activism show she is suited to the role. Before joining the royal family, Meghan showed support for Hillary Clinton and branded Donald Trump “divisive”.

Her remarks about the 2020 US presidential election were also viewed as a sign of possible political ambitions.

In September, Betfair slashed odds on the likelihood of Meghan running for President in 2024 from 66/1 to 20/1.

Discussing the potential future career, Mr Fitzwilliams said: “It would be no surprise if she eventually went into politics.

“Meghan is exceptionally well connected with connections in the Democrat party. She knows the likes of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

“Well-placed high profile contacts from Oprah to George Clooney could act as a springboard.

“There’s no doubt Meghan has many qualities that would suit the role. She is an articulate speaker and has been an activist since a very young age.

“She would be looking at the long-term possibility of becoming a politician, in the distant future.

“Focuses such as female equality, diversity and mental health are pivotal to today’s politics and very important to Meghan too.”

Neither she nor Harry endorsed any political party but some observers saw this as coded support for Democrat Joe Biden.

A spokesperson for the couple said the comments were “a call for decency” and did not refer to any specific political party or candidate.

Meghan and Prince Harry’s relationship met in July 2016 on a blind date and made their first public outing as a couple in 2017.

They were married on May 19, 2018 and announced they would be stepping back from their duties as senior members of the Royal Family in January 2020.

The couple now live in Montecito, California with their son, Archie, who is one years old.
