Buckingham Palace recently dismissed claims the Queen was potentially stepping down from the role she has held since 1952 when she turns 95 later this year. If this had happened, Prince Charles would then be crowned king as he is first in line to the throne and would become Sovereign of Australia’s constitutional monarchy. In this role, he would not get involved directly with decision making with the Australian Government and would only be involved in ceremonial and symbolic aspects of Australian culture.

But Sandy Biar, national director at Australian Republic Movement, warned Commonwealth nations such as Australia should get to decide on its future head of state.

He added Prince Charles may not be accepted when he becomes king in the Commonwealth nation.

He told Express.co.uk: “Australians deserve to have an Australian, chosen by Australians as the head of our nation.

“When Charles succeeds Queen Elizabeth II, Australians will get no say at all about him becoming the head of our country.”

“Charles has been a divisive and controversial figure in Australia and the UK for quite some time, and his ascension will bring about an unprecedented period of instability and uncertainty for the monarchy.”

But royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams warned the Royal Family’s succession is not based on a “popularity contest”.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “In a hereditary monarchy the line of succession is clear.

“Charles will be the next king and nothing foreseeably will alter that.

“It is not a popularity contest.

In the show, Charles was left angry when Australians fell in love with Diana and shunned the future king.

However, it is believed the couple actually were on good terms during this trip, as pictures from the time show them dancing together and laughing.

They also visited attractions such as Ayers Rock, now named Uluru.

Despite the show straying away from accuracy, it resulted in Charles and Camilla turning off comments on their social media posts to avoid backlash over Diana last year.

Buckingham Palace also said the Queen has no intention of stepping down after she kept out of the public eye due to the coronavirus pandemic last year.

Palace aides recently said: “It’s a delicate line but I think we will see her doing private audiences again and more of the work we are used to seeing her do in public at some point in the future.

“She is still receiving her red Government boxes and having her weekly audience with the Prime Minister.

“There is no suggestion of her stepping back, she is very much fulfilling her duties as head of state.”
