Prince Philip health: Prince Edward says Duke is ‘a lot better’

The Queen’s husband is being treated at King Edward VII’s Hospital in central London for a non-Covid related illness. In a short statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed the duke has an infection. Previously, it was not known what Philip was suffering from. The palace said: “The Duke of Edinburgh remains at King Edward VII’s Hospital where he is receiving medical attention for an infection.

“He is comfortable and responding to treatment but is not expected to leave hospital for several days.”

Prince Charles visited the Duke fo Edinburgh, 99, last week and stayed for about half an hour.

No other relatives have paid Philip a visit after he was admitted to the private hospital last Tuesday as a precautionary measure after feeling unwell.

He walked into the building unaided.

Speaking to Sky News, Prince Edward said his father was “a lot better” and looking forward to being discharged from hospital.

He said the Royal Family were “keeping their fingers crossed”.

The Earl of Wessex said he had spoken to his father a few days ago and said he had been touched by the outpouring of kind messages.

Edward said: “He’s a lot better, thank you very much indeed and he’s looking forward to getting out, which is the most positive thing so we keep our fingers crossed.”

Asked whether Philip was frustrated to be in hospital, Edward laughed and replied: “Just a bit.

“I think that gets to all of us, and then, you can only watch the clock so many times and the walls are only so interesting.”

Last week a Buckingham Palace source told the BBC the duke’s doctors were acting with “an abundance of caution” and had decided to keep him in hospital for further treatment.

On Monday the Duke of Cambridge gave an update on his grandfather’s health.

During a visit to a vaccination centre in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, William said Philip was “OK” and and doctors were “keeping an eye on him” in hospital.

The Queen and Philip received coronavirus vaccines in January, the palace confirmed.

Philip retired from public life in 2017 and has since spent much of his time living in solitude at Wood Farm, a cottag on the edge of the Queen’s Sandringham Estate.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic he spent the majority of last year with the Queen.
