The Duke of Cambridge was the subject of a joke by fried chicken restaurant KFC after a picture emerged showing him gawping into the window of its Waterloo branch. He was walking with his wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, on his way to visit one of the 112 community exhibitions showcasing her Hold Still photography project when he got suddenly distracted.

After looking inside the KFC window, the Duke waved at customers who looked amused by the situation.

Fast-food restaurant chain took to Twitter to make a joke about the moment.

The tweet, featuring a picture of William, read: “William whispered quietly to himself; ’Oh, I just can’t wait to be wing.’”

Later, it added: “I’m sad I didn’t call him His Royal Thighness in the main tweet [to be honest].”

The tweet attracted more than 23,000 likes, with royal fans commenting on the restaurant’s joke.

One fan wrote: “Can you imagine the reaction of the person sitting on the other side of this window??

“You happen to look up right into the eyes of none other than Prince William. (What I wouldn’t give to be that person!)”

Another person added: “He looks like he is having a conversation with his reflection.”

Another Twitter user added: “This lightened up my day – these puns are hysterical. And now I have a craving for KFC!”

During the day, the Cambridges met Sami Massalami Mohammed Elmassalami Ayad, a volunteer at a community Food Hub in Hackney who was featured in one of the portraits submitted to the Hold Still project.

About his meeting with Kate and William, Mr Massalami said: “It was such a joy to meet the Duke and Duchess and I can’t believe my picture made it to the final 100.

“I didn’t even know it was being submitted by my colleague at the food hub so it came as a massive shock when I got a call from the National Portrait Gallery saying the Duchess wanted to speak to me.
