Prince William has teamed up with Sir David Attenborough to launch a £50million environmental award to try to protect and save the living world. The ‘Earthshot Prize’ has been introduced by the royal and natural historian to celebrate ideas and technologies that target climate crisis. Lord Deben, the Chairman of the Committee on Climate Change, got into a tense exchange with Sky News host Isabel Webster when she brought up Prince Harry for comparison.

Ms Webster asked: “One wonders if the same positive response would be given if Prince Harry had made some of these suggestions and comments?

“It’s okay for Prince William to have an opinion, but perhaps not for Prince Harry.”

Lord Deben shot back: “I think that really is to introduce into the argument something quite unnecessary.

“The fact is that this is an opinion of Prince William.”

He continued: “Prince William has launched this, I think the world will be very pleased.

“One of the reasons he launched it are his two sons and daughter.

“They are the future and he is determined to do his part to make a difference.

“He has linked up with David Attenborough who has done so much over the years to tell people just how serious this is.”

He added: “I think it’s exactly where he ought to be.

“It’s a wonderful thing to have a monarchy that can actually do this.”

The Duke of Cambridge and Sir David have said they hope the venture will become the “Nobel Prize for environmentalism”.

The £50 million will be awarded over a decade.

It is the biggest environmental prize ever.
