The Crown season four depicts Charles proposing to Diana in episode three and the media frenzy that followed. It features their engagement interview, which has a very awkward moment when the interviewer comments that they look very much in love. Diana responds, “Yes, absolutely,” before Charles adds: “Whatever ‘in love’ means.”
When Diana is on the phone to her old flatmates later, they assure her he was “probably just a bit embarrassed”.
Incredibly, this terribly awkward moment in the interview actually happened in real life.
When asked whether the couple are in love, Diana responded “of course” before Charles said: “Whatever ‘in love’ means.”
The Princess of Wales spoke out years later about what she thought of the prince’s response.

She admitted: “That threw me completely. I thought, what a strange [answer].
“It absolutely traumatised me.”
This was just the beginning of Charles and Diana’s relationship problems and they weren’t even married yet.
The Netflix drama also shows Diana discovering a bracelet Charles had made for his ex-girlfriend Camilla Parker Bowles.
“And then someone in his office told me that my husband has had a bracelet made for her.
“I walked into this man’s office one day and I said, ‘Ooh, what’s in that parcel?’ and he said, ‘Oh, you shouldn’t look at that.’
“So I opened it and there was the bracelet.”
Inside, she found a gold bracelet from Asprey’s with a lapis pandemic engraved with the letters F and G.
In The Crown, Camilla, played by Emerald Fennell, tells Diana over an awkward lunch that the nicknames were just “harmless nonsense”.
However, Diana did not think so, neither in the Netflix show or in real life.
She told Mr Morton: “I was devastated, and I said, ‘Well, he’s going to give it to her tonight’.
“So rage, rage, rage. You know, ‘Why can’t you be honest with me?’ But no, absolutely cut me dead.
“It was as if he’d made a decision, and if it wasn’t going to work, it wasn’t going to work.”
