Ms Monckton claims Diana was dishonestly “coerced” by BBC journalist Martin Bashir, using falsified documents, into giving her infamous 1995 Panorama interview. Prince William, 38, has welcomed the BBC’s decision to set up an independent investigation into the claims.

Ms Monckton, whose daughter Domenica is a goddaughter of the late Princess, said: “Any son would want to stand up for his mother in such circumstances. But for him and for Kensington Palace to issue a statement I think shows how deeply involved he has become in this story and about how his mother was treated.”

The Prince is understood to have been keeping in close contact with the BBC over the past two weeks.

It comes amid renewed claims that Bashir had fake documents created to try to persuade Diana that her staff were betraying her by selling information about her.

Ms Monckton has also welcomed the investigation, which will be led by retired judge Lord Dyson.

She said: “I think it’s very important that we look at it 25 years on. It did change the course of history.”

A graphic designer who was allegedly asked to create fake bank statements to help secure the interview has claimed he was made a “fall guy” by the BBC amid allegations of a cover-up.

But the BBC has said it has a letter from Diana in which she said she did not see the false bank statements and that they played no part in her decision to give the interview.

Ms Monckton recalled Diana getting nervous around the time of the interview.

She said: “She was jumpy, she was edgy, she thought she was being followed. I mean really, extraordinarily different.

“Everybody knew something was wrong but none of us could put a finger on it.”

She insisted she would have advised Diana not to give the interview if she had known she was planning to do it, adding that it accelerated her divorce from Charles.
