The couple are thought to have moved into Frogmore Cottage in mid-November but had already left the property just six weeks later. Prince Harry and Meghan were said to have loaned the five-bedroom cottage to the royal couple to “start their own family”.

Eugenie, 30, is pregnant and expecting her first child in early 2021.

She and partner Jack, 35, spent Christmas at the Royal Lodge. It is the childhood home she shared with older sister Beatrice, 32, and the current residence of parents Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York.

Sarah and Andrew divorced in 1996 but share a close friendship and continue to live together.

Speaking on the Heirpod podcast, Mr Scobie, who wrote the best selling Harry and Meghan biography Finding Freedom, said Eugenie and Jack spent Christmas at the residence.

He told listeners: “I imagine that’s probably where they will remain up until much later in the year.”

This makes sense against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic and with Eugenie due to give birth in the coming weeks.

But The Queen will have to break royal tradition due to the Covid guidelines – because she will not be able to meet the royal baby.

It is the first on the York side of the family, making it the first grandchild for Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

The new baby will be the Queen’s ninth greatgrandchild. The monarch, 99, is usually one of the first members of the firm to meet any new additions.

A-list neighbour Rob Lowe claims to have since the prince driving his car potentially sporting a new ponytailed hair do.

He told James Corden on The Late Late Show: “It looked to me, as a casual observer, that his hair had grown very long and was pulled back very tightly by what I can only assume was a ponytail.”
