The Queen “did her best to make [the divorce process] better” for her sister Princess Margaret, according to friends close to the Royal Family. The monarch’s “close” relationship with her younger sibling was analysed as part of Channel 5’s documentary ‘Elizabeth: Our Queen’. Margaret was married to Anthony Armstrong Jones, or Lord Snowdon, for almost 20 years before the marriage collapsed.

Narrator James D’Arcy told viewers: “The two sisters were close and had difficult times.

“In the 50s, the Queen had not been able to support her sister’s relationship with divorcee Group Captain Peter Townsend.

“Despite this tension, they had remained close.”

Lady Anne Glenconner, a Lady-in-Waiting to Margaret and one of her best friends, gave her own insight into the relationship.

She said: “Princess Margaret adored the Queen, and was always very loyal.

“She always talked and was very proud of what the Queen had done and all that.

“During the break-up of Princess Margaret’s marriage to Anthony Armstrong Jones, the Queen had been a great support.

“The children used to go and stay with her a lot.”

Lady Glenconner told BBC Radio 4: “It could have been such a success.

“He gave her the sort of life she wasn’t used to – black leather, motorbikes and meeting all these sorts of glamorous people.

“But I think that he got bored with it all.

“So many people have had sadnesses in their life, but there’s a lot of happiness too.

“I suppose I’ve laughed with Princess Margaret more than anybody else actually.”
