The Queen’s decision to reveal that she and Prince Philip had been administered the coronavirus vaccine was not her first breach of royal protocol in this way, according to commentators. Buckingham Palace had confirmed that the monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh had received their first doses although it is extremely rare for royals to release private medical information. ITV Royal Rota podcast hosts Chris Ship and Lizzie Robinson discussed how this “echoed” a similar situation with Prince Charles and Princess Anne in the 50s.

Mr Ship told listeners: “It’s not the first time the Queen’s done this.

“Back in the 1950s, around ’57, the Queen announced that Charles and Anne had had the polio vaccine.

“They were aged eight and six respectively at the time.

“This was at a time when there was a lot of public concern about the polio vaccine.”

Ms Robinson agreed: “It’s similar, isn’t it? Installing public confidence in a vaccine.

“It can influence others if the Royal Family are going ahead and having it.

“It makes them think well if it’s good enough for them then it’s good enough for all of us.

“I think this now echoes what she did back in 1957.”

Ms Robinson added further insight: “They don’t tend to disclose personal medical matters.

“But this came from the Queen herself.

“She wanted to ensure that there is no further speculation or inaccuracies around whether they had had the vaccination.

“It was received quite positively that they had come out and said they had it.

“It encourages public confidence in this vaccination.”
