Republic is an organisation that campaigns for the abolishment of the monarchy and for Queen Elizabeth II to be replaced by a democratic, elected head of state. Graham Smith, the organisation’s CEO, told Express.co.uk that Prince Andrew withdrawing from duties, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping back from royal life and the prospect of the Queen dying in the next 10 years will leave the monarchy with only a few recognisable members.

The Republic CEO said: “I think the monarchy has a difficult decade ahead.

“They have lost three of their lead stars at the beginning of the year, Andrew has stepped back and will never come back to the front line.

“Meghan and Harry have left, the Queen is withdrawing more and more due to her age and she is likely to die before the end of the decade.

“What you are left with is the only recognisable royals as Charles, William and Kate.”

Mr Smith continued: “Charles does not have the same warmth and support that others have and quite frankly William and Kate are rather dull uninspiring individuals that will always play second-fiddle to the next monarch.”

“It is all going to take a lot of shine off the monarchy and raise questions on why we have to put up with it.”

He added: “The line-up of royals that we have been used to for so many years is dwindling fast.”

Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal commentator, strongly disagreed with the view put forward by Republic.

The royal commentator added: “The enormous popularity of the Queen and that of the monarchy was clear in the recent YouGov poll.

“It will again be evident when a grateful nation commemorates the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in the summer of 2022.

“As for why the nation supports the royals, their role as symbols of national unity which is above party politics as well as their charity work and global profile, to name but a few of the benefits, are among the reasons.”
