The couple had been dating for nine years before Prince William finally proposed. The big moment arrived during a trip to Kenya in October 2010 as the couple enjoyed a holiday retreat near Mount Kenya. Prince William would later reveal that he carried his mother’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring in his rucksack for three weeks before proposing.

He said that he was terrified of losing it.

Kate called the moment “very romantic” and admitted that the proposal had come as a “total shock”.

The young couple decided to keep the engagement a secret for a couple of weeks before making it public.

They went to great lengths to hide the news even from most of their own families and friends.

But then tragedy struck. Just days before Prince William and Kate were due to announce their engagement, Kate’s grandfather Peter tragically passed away.

He was the Duchess’ last living grandparent.
