Mr Khan has been considering a blanket fee of £5.50 per day for drivers whose vehicles are registered outside the 33 boroughs of London. Mr Khan has asked The Transport for London (TFL) officials to examine the “feasibility” of proposals that would see a fee for drivers within the greater London boundary. Mr Khan argued: “Londoners pay £500million worth of Vehicle Excise Duty every year.

“This is then spent on maintaining roads outside the capital.

“It is not fair on London that our drivers should subsidise the rest of the country’s roads and get nothing in return.

“If Ministers aren’t prepared to play fair, then we will need to consider other options to address this unfairness, such as asking people who live outside London and make journeys into Greater London by car to pay a modest charge, which would be reinvested in London’s transport network.”

In response to Sadiq Khan’s scheme Tory mayor candidate, Mr Bailey tweeted: “Sadiq Khan is turning London into one giant toll road.

“At a time when our economy is struggling, we need to keep London open for business.

“I’ll scrap his plans on day one and build a fairer, more affordable city.”

The coronavirus pandemic has hit TFL’s finances.

Mr Khan has said the organisation now had to rely on fares for three-quarters of its income since the Government ended its annual £700million per year subsidy for the company.

Mr Khan has also proposed axing bus routes in the suburbs and reforming TfL’s “expensive” employee pension scheme.

Now Mr Khan’s opponent Mr Bailey has argued the current London mayor is “blaming others for his own failures”.

Conservative candidate for mayor of London Mr Baily proposed that Mr Khan was blaming “others” for the latest failures in completion of London’s major transport projects.

He tweeted: “It’s time Sadiq Khan stops blaming others for his failures.

“He‘s had five years to fix London’s problems.

“Yet Crossrail is four years behind schedule and TfL debt has reached £12 billion.

“We need a Mayor who takes responsibility.”
