Dr Nikita Kanani, director of primary care at NHS England, urged all those expecting to receive the vaccine to be patient and wait to be called up by their GP.

She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “There’s a huge range of things that general practices are already doing so if we can ask for people to just wait a moment and wait to be contacted that would be very appreciated.”

When will 70-year-olds get the Covid vaccine?

Care home residents and carers, along with frontline health and social care workers, are the first eligible groups for Covid vaccines in the UK.

The vaccine will then be offered in age order to those over the age of 80, then the over-75s and the over-70s.
