The siblings were speaking on the ITV documentary ‘Anne: The Princess Royal at 70’ about their family’s achievements in the equestrian world. Zara, 39, and both her parents ‒ Princess Anne, 70, and Mark Phillips, 72 ‒ have won a gold medal in three-day eventing at some point. While Peter, 42, grew up around horses and rode a lot when he was younger, he never took it up professionally.

However, he does work in the world of sport, having chosen a career in sports sponsorship and management.

In the documentary this year, Peter said: “It was pointed out to me a while ago that I am the only one in my direct family not to have a gold medal, but we’ve moved on from that.”

Peter laughed awkwardly, while Zara reached over and rubbed his shoulder.

The siblings’ mother Princess Anne won her gold medal at the European Eventing Championships in Burghley in 1971, for the individual event.

She later won two silver medals in the team and individual eventing in 1975 in Luhmuhlen.

Meanwhile, their father Mark won three gold medals in team eventing: One at the 1970 World Eventing Championships in Punchestown, one at the 1971 European Eventing Championships in Burghley and one at the 1972 Olympics in Munich.

He also won silver medals in team eventing at the 1974 World Championships in Burghley and the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

Zara has also won three gold medals: two in the individual and team events at the 2005 European Eventing Championship in Blenheim and one in the individual event at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen.

She also won a silver medal in the team event at the 2006 event in Aachan and in the 2012 Olympics in London.

When Zara won her silver medal at the Olympics, it was presented to her by her mother, Princess Anne.

Zara told the documentary: “To be given your medal by your mother is pretty special.

“You can’t really ever explain that feeling.

“She very much knows what it takes to achieve and to win.

“Having the whole family come and watch was incredible as well.”

Peter added: “All the cousins were there, weren’t they? It was a really special, special family day.”

Zara said: “It’s the only competition that everyone’s watched me in.”

Peter smiled and replied: “If it’s going to be one, it’s got to be that one!”

Both Zara and Anne have been awarded BBC Sports Personality of the Year ‒ Zara in 2006 and Anne in 1971.

Both were astonished at their win, given how little known their sport is.

On the back of her achievements in the sport, Princess Anne has been fully involved in the equestrian world since retiring from riding herself.

She is President of the British Olympic Association and sits on the International Olympic Committee.

She also hosts the British Festival of Eventing at her home at Gatcombe Park each year and goes to watch Zara in her various competitions.
