Harry’s Christmas book puts a sparkle into the festive season for care home residents

PoliticMag Press Release : December 03, 2020

A care worker has written his own Christmas book to cheer up residents during this Covid19-hit festive season.

Harry Killick, 25, who works as an activities worker at AlneHall, York, wrote his story, Laura’s Christmasland Adventure, during the months of lockdown.

Harry was able to achieve one of his life’s ambitions by writing the book and has now got it published online.

Harry said: “Residents have had it really tough during the pandemic, so I just wanted to do something to get them in the Christmas mood. One of my ambitions has been to write a book and this seemed the perfect time to put pen to paper.

“I have worked through the pandemic at AlneHall and used my spare time to write the book. I have shared chapters with residents and they gave me plenty of feedback.

“I have now read the story to residents and their response has been overwhelming. They really enjoyed the story and are asking for a sequel – That might be my project for next year.”

Harry studied performing arts at Teesside University before working at Alne Hall which provides support for adults living with physical disabilities.

His story is a young girl called Laura who suffers a tragedy at Christmas and then goes to live with her aunt and uncle. A mysterious notebook arrives and it sets Laura and her cousin off on an adventure.

Alne Hall is part of the Valorum Care Group which operates schemes across Yorkshire and other parts of England.

Valorum Care Group Group Strategic Development DirectorKatie Drakeford said: “Harry is a real inspiration. He has created awonderful story that captures the essence of Christmas.

Our staff have gone the extra mile to bring normality to residents’ lives during the pandemic. As we approach Christmas, the efforts of Harry and all our staff are so important as we try to give residents Christmas as it should be.”
