The veteran broadcaster made the damning comments on Twitter, where he criticised the “hard left” teaching union. He claimed the National Education Union, which has over half-a-million members, object to schools reopening, prompting Mr Neil to mock the “hard-left”. 

He said: “Hard-left National Education Union opposes schools reopening even if all teachers get a priority jab.

“Schools clearly an inconvenience for teachers’ union, since they only get in the way of its real passion — political activism.

“It would help NEA if we just closed schools forever.”
