Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall will be “absolutely key” to Prince Charles’ reign, according to a royal commentator. With the Prince of Wales being next in line to the throne, the Duchess’ position in the Royal Family is now integral to the future of the monarchy. Royal biographer Penny Junor discussed how the future consort would be viewed in history on Channel 5’s documentary, ‘The Royals At War’.

She said: “I think [Camilla] will be absolutely key to Charles’ reign.

“I think she will be the strength behind him.

“She’s there because she loves Charles and she wants to support him.

“I think she will be seen by history not as the woman who nearly destroyed the monarchy, but actually the woman who really shored it up.”

Although Camilla will be by Charles’ side when he ascends to the throne, she will not be known as his Queen.

Clarence House confirmed again in 2020 that the Duchess’ title will be HRH The Princess Consort once the Prince of Wales becomes king.

In a statement, they said: “The intention is for the Duchess to be known as Princess Consort when the Prince accedes to the throne.

“This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

The commentator continued: “Princess Consort historically is something that doesn’t exist, it’s been invented.

“This was clarified subsequently because people did think that Camilla would be Queen.

“The only reason Camilla isn’t Queen Consort is, of course, because of the background with Diana.

“Camilla’s become popular in the country because they realise that she does a good job.

“Also, she makes Charles happy, the two of them have always been inseparable.”
