The Duchess of Cornwall’s Reading Room opens today with Hilary Mantel’s novel about Cromwell’s final years, The Mirror And The Light. She has also picked Where The Crawdads Sing, a tale of an abandoned girl, by Delia Owens; spy thriller Restless by William Boyd and The Architect’s Apprentice by Elif Shafak, about a boy in 16th-century Istanbul.

Camilla, 73, wants to use books to unite people of all ages and backgrounds, particularly during the pandemic, with an online community as achieved by our own Richard and Judy. More than 30,000 people have signed up.

She will recommend fresh titles each season to showcase writing including poetry from across the Commonwealth. There will also be details and videos about the authors with ideas for readers to discuss.

Camilla – patron of seven literary or literacy organisations – said: “Reading is a great adventure. I’d love everybody else to enjoy it as much as I do. You can escape…you can laugh and you can cry.”
