Asked if she should take the Conservatives into the next election, David Lidington said the Prime Minister would “decide in due course what she wants to do”.

The Cabinet Office Minister’s carefully crafted statement suggests Mrs May knows her political days are numbered.

It could also be seen as a bid to head off any leadership coup to topple her early, by reassuring rivals she does not expect to make good on previous hints that she will still be in charge at the next election.
