Kate Middleton: Expert on ‘opportunity to laugh at husband’

Kate has been hailed a beacon of stability as her 10-year-anniversary as full-time working royals approaches. The Duchess of Cambridge, according to an expert, is “consistent” and continues to bring happiness to people through her royal work.

Elizabeth Holmes, author of HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style, told People Royals: “There is a tremendous power in being consistent and making people happy.

“There aren’t that many powerful people who can do that.”

The Duchess has also been hailed for her style and fresh approach to royalty.

Ms Holmes said: “You can look through 10 years of pictures of Kate Middleton and there are no off moments”.

After Meghan Markle and Prince Harry relocated to the US and stepped down as senior royals, Kate has remained the only female member of the Firm of her generation.

Historian Sarah Gristwood, author of Elizabeth: The Queen and the Crown, said: “Kate is now the only real possible provider of the glamour factor.”

Throughout the past decade as the wife of future king William, Kate has been careful to abide by royal protocol and etiquette.

She has not touched upon political issues, in line with the Crown’s desire to remain balanced and neutral, and has embraced royal duties.

However, alongside Prince William and Prince Harry, she has made mental health and mental wellbeing two key areas of concern and focus of the Royal Family and her work.

The three royals launched Heads Together in 2016, an initiative aiming to make it easier for people to open up about their struggles.

Moreover, since the beginning of the pandemic, Kate and Prince William have made the wellbeing and support of key workers their top priority.

Kate has also focused much of her royal work over the past decade on the mental wellbeing and development of children and how to enhance it.

Her research and background work on these issues were laid bare in late 2020, when the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge launched the first forum on the Early Years.

With her early years project, Kate aims to raise awareness, spread information and improve the knowledge of the impact the first five years of children have on their development and adult life.

Kate, who is the mother of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, hasn’t shied away from opening up herself on challenges and struggles, especially over the past year.

In April last year, Kate and William opened up about homeschooling two of their three children while also working, saying they had faced “ups and downs” like “lots of families”.

Becoming the teachers of their three children, she added, had been “challenging” but they had kept a strict routine.

A few weeks later, Kate also opened up on her family’s day-to-day life, saying Prince George was getting “upset” when comparing his and his sister’s homework.

Appearing on ITV’s This Morning, Kate said: “George gets very upset because he wants to do Charlotte’s projects.

“Because making things like spider sandwiches is far cooler than doing literacy work!”

And in January, Kate dived into the toll the pandemic has taken on her as a parent, saying she has found it “exhausting”.

During a video call with parents of children attending Roe Green Junior School in Kingsbury, north-west London, Kate explained she was feeling pulled “in so many different direction”.

She said: “I think as parents you’ve got the day-to-day elements of being a parent, but I suppose during lockdown we have had to take on additional roles that perhaps others in our communities, or in our lives, would have perhaps supported us and helped us with.”

Kate added: “I’ve become a hairdresser this lockdown, much to my children’s horror, seeing mum cutting hair.

“We’ve had to become a teacher – and I think, personally, I feel pulled in so many different directions and you try your best with everything, but at the end of the day I do feel exhausted.”

As the wife of the next Prince of Wales, Kate will likely become the first Princess of Wales since Diana.

And, when the Duke of Cambridge becomes king, Kate will assume by law the title of Queen Consort.
