Mr Khan along with members of his security team saddled their electric bikes on their commute from Tooting to City Hall. The London Mayor and his entourage were also curtailed throughout the journey by additional staff in a large 4×4 Range Rover. Mr Khan made the journey while wearing a blue suit, work bag slung over his shoulder and a black helmet.

The decision to travel to on two wheels to his London office comes on “Car Free Day” in the capital, where commuters are urged to travel to work on bikes and public transport.

Despite making all rental bikes in the capital free to hire, Mr Khan chose to use his own Brompton e-bike, which retails for a whopping £2,700.

The green initiative also did not stop Mr Khan from preventing his security team from driving a V8-engine Range Rover, which is regularly used by the London Mayor.

The vehicle is thought to be a Rover Sentinel equipped with a Supercharged five-litre engine.

The Metropolitan Police provides 24-hour protection to the London Mayor who has been the subject of vile threats during his time in office.

Throughout his time in the charge of the capital, Mr Khan has made it his mission to clampdown on polluting vehicles.

Since April 2019, an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has been in force in central London to ensure cars and vans meet tighter exhaust emission standards.

The congestion charge of £12.50 now operates 24 hours per day, seven days a week, with Christmas Day the only exception.

From October 25, 2021, the ULEZ area will be expanded to include the inner London area bounded by the North and South Circular Roads.

Cars are one of the highest producers of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) which is released into the atmosphere when fuel is burned at high temperature.

Earlier today, the London Mayor also launched an air quality monitoring project to encourage children and parents to use other forms of transport on their journey to school.

He said: “I’m delighted that we are launching our School Streets air quality monitoring project on Car Free Day.

“It is vital that we don’t throw away the improvements made to air quality during lockdown and the past few months with a damaging car-based recovery from this pandemic.

“The 430 new School Streets which have been funded as part of our world-leading Streetspace plan will play an important role in enabling parents and children to walk, cycle or scoot to and from school which has so many benefits, not least in improving air quality.”
