Kathy Ellis, who is running to represent Missouri’s 8th Congressional District, sided with Meghan after Republican congressman Jason Smith accused her and Prince Harry of “interfering” in the US election. Ms Ellis wrote on Twitter: “In the last hour, we’ve received calls from people all across the country who are deeply concerned about @JasonSmithMO’s comments re: Meghan Markle, and his singling out of her specifically, as a woman of color.

“Let me say clearly: his comments are totally unacceptable.

“As an American citizen, Markle certainly has the right to encourage people to vote & to ‘reject hate, misinformation’.

“Smith should focus on some of the issues impacting his constituents, instead of this nonsense.”

After providing a link to her campaign website, Ms Ellis added the hashtag “SussexSquad”, widely used by fans of Meghan on Twitter.

Ms Ellis, who hopes to snatch Mr Smith’s seat on November 3, responded to a blistering letter the congressman sent to the British Ambassador in the UK, Dame Karen Pierce, overnight.

Sharing it on Twitter, the congressman accused Harry and Meghan of using “foreign titles to campaign against President Trump and interfere with our election” and urged the British Government to “put a stop to it”.

In the letter, Mr Smith openly accused Meghan and Prince Harry of “breaching the Royal Family’s policy of political neutrality”.

The congressmen singled out the Duke’s calls for the rejection of “hate speech, misinformation and online negativity” as well as the Duchess’ appeal to register to vote in the “most important election of our lifetime”.
