Meghan and Prince Harry are to reconvene in March with the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William over the so-called Megxit deal struck in January last year. During this review, both parts are expected to discuss terms of the Sussexes’ exit they are unhappy with.

One royal historian doesn’t expect the royals to make any changes to the deal already in place.

She also does not believe the Queen would strip Meghan and Harry of their titles.

However, she believes it could be possible for the monarch to suggest the Duke and Duchess to go by Harry Sussex and Meghan Sussex whenever they are dealing with initiatives and work that isn’t related to the Royal Family.

US royal expert Marlene Koenig told Express.co.uk: “They are not going to lose their titles.

“I’d be very surprised if the Queen were to issue a letter patent to remove their titles.

“What I can see is a recommendation that they don’t use Duke and Duchess of Sussex in their career.”

This choice would not be groundbreaking as other royals very close to the Queen have already done it in the past, Ms Koenig has pointed out.

She continued: “Beatrice and Eugenie use Beatrice York and Eugenie York in business.

“When Prince Edward created Ardent back in the 1990s used Edward Windsor.

“There are precedents for styling their names in this way.

“It is not illegal to use a title in the US.

“Why not use Meghan Sussex and Harry Sussex in the credit [of their future work]?”

The royal historian noted Meghan and Harry could attract less criticism from their detractors if they signed off their speaking engagements or work with Netflix and Spotify as Harry and Meghan Sussex.

She continued: “It doesn’t diminish who they are, they are still the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, they are still royal highnesses and they are still prince and princess of the UK.

“They could use those when necessary in their lives as royals – be that Trooping the Colour or a coronation.

“[Doing so] doesn’t diminish their royal status at all, it’s just doing what other people have done and there would be far less criticism from people claiming they are capitalism from their royal status.”

Meghan and Prince Harry signed contracts with Spotify and Netflix last year.

These will see them produce content, including TV shows, documentaries and podcasts, exclusively for the streaming platforms.

Following the announcement of their deals, a few royal watchers claimed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were exploiting their royal connections to struck financial deals.

In September, after the Sussexes announced their agreement with Netflix, ITV’s Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan said: “The only reason Netflix is paying them all this money is because of their royal titles – you think Meghan Markle would have got £1.50 out of them without it?”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially stepped down as senior royals in March last year.

Following Megxit, they still retain their full titles but have been barred from using their His/Her Royal Highness style.
