Meghan Markle, 39, and Prince Harry, 35, are the subjects of a widely-anticipated unofficial biography titled ‘Finding Freedom’ which was released today. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had their side of the story put out there by hundreds of insiders who spoke to the authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand. In the book, Meghan was said to “have broken down in tears” after a Kensington palace aide “scolded” her for wearing a piece of jewellery with hers and Harry’s initials on.

Mr Scobie was asked by ITV presenter Andi Peters: “As far as I’m concerned, if one of my friends went and said that to you or a paper, I’d be mortified. Do you think that person now is still talking to Meghan? Because they’ve revealed quite a lot.”

Speaking to ITV’s Lorraine, Mr Scobie said: “You’ve mentioned a couple of the names of the friends and they really held a tight circle around them.

“But what we saw during this time where there were a lot of attacks through the tabloid press and commentators were friends that were desperate to defend the couple.

“Friends that felt if they spoke up when the couple couldn’t, they would perhaps be able to reframe the narrative a little bit and shed a light on who they really were.

“The example you read now is perfect and we did speak to people on both side of the situation about that.

“We also spoke to Palace aides who got to know the couple through those early days and helped guide Meghan through the difficult moments.

“But it is always interesting to see how the Palace may deal with something and how Meghan may have felt at the time.

“I think when you have a group of friends that are worried about you, it is something that is widely discussed in the circle.”

The source said: “While she knew the aide had good intentions, the surreal experience of having someone from her boyfriend’s office tell her what kind of jewellery to wear or not to smile at a photographer was too much.”

According to the source, “distraught,” Meghan then spoke a friend lamenting the conversation with the aide.

She said: “I can’t win. They make out like I’m to blame for these pictures, that it looks like I’m encouraging them, that me even acknowledging the cameras may not be sending the right message.

“I don’t know what to say. It was only yesterday that people online were saying I look miserable in pictures because I was trying to just ignore the photographer.”
