Meghan Markle: Royal expert gives court case update

Meghan is currently locked in a legal battle over the letter’s publication. She is claiming the Mail on Sunday and Mail Online, which published parts of the handwritten note, breached copyright and data protection laws.

The case is currently being heard after being delayed from the autumn due to a “confidential” reason.

As part of the case on Tuesday a witness statement from Mr Markle was presented to the court.

The 76-year-old former lighting director claimed he provided the letter to the Mail on Sunday after five of Meghan’s close friends were interviewed anonymously for an article in People magazine.

He said: “It was a total lie. It misrepresented the tone and content of the letter Meg had written me in August 2018.

“I quickly decided I wanted to correct that misrepresentation.”

According to Meghan’s lawyers the letter was sent as a “heartfelt plea” to her father urging him to cut access to the press.

However, Mr Markle strongly rejected this in his statement claiming the letter was “not an attempt at reconciliation”.

He added: “It was a criticism of me. The letter didn’t say she loved me.

“It did not even ask how I was. It showed no concern about the fact I had suffered a heart attack and asked no questions about my health.

“It actually signalled the end of our relationship, not a reconciliation.”

Mr Markle pulled out of Meghan’s wedding, in May 2018, after claiming to have undergone heart surgery.

The service, watched by millions around the world, took place at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel.
