Meghan Markle: Royal expert gives court case update

Meghan is currently locked in a legal battle over the letter’s publication. She is claiming the Mail on Sunday and Mail Online, which published parts of the handwritten note, breached copyright and data protection laws.

The case is currently being heard after being delayed from the autumn due to a “confidential” reason.

As part of the case on Tuesday a witness statement from Mr Markle was presented to the court.

The 76-year-old former lighting director claimed he provided the letter to the Mail on Sunday after five of Meghan’s close friends were interviewed anonymously for an article in People magazine.

He said: “It was a total lie. It misrepresented the tone and content of the letter Meg had written me in August 2018.

“I quickly decided I wanted to correct that misrepresentation.”

According to Meghan’s lawyers the letter was sent as a “heartfelt plea” to her father urging him to cut access to the press.

However, Mr Markle strongly rejected this in his statement claiming the letter was “not an attempt at reconciliation”.

He added: “It was a criticism of me. The letter didn’t say she loved me.

“It did not even ask how I was. It showed no concern about the fact I had suffered a heart attack and asked no questions about my health.

“It actually signalled the end of our relationship, not a reconciliation.”

Mr Markle pulled out of Meghan’s wedding, in May 2018, after claiming to have undergone heart surgery.

The service, watched by millions around the world, took place at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel.

Due to her father’s absence Meghan was led down the aisle by Prince Charles, now her father-in-law.

Mr Markle had earlier been accused by the Mail on Sunday of staging paparazzi pictures with a photographer at an internet café.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stood down as senior members of the Royal Family last March.

Instead, the couple vowed to become “financially independent” whilst continuing to support the monarchy.

Meghan Markle and Harry have achieved goals says expert

They currently live in California, Meghan’s home state, in a mansion north of Los Angeles.

Mr Markle has also claimed he is working on a documentary charting the breakdown of his relationship with Meghan.

Speaking to he said: “It begins with my life, my family, my love of theatre and television and how I got there.

“Then my life with Meghan, growing up, her school days until she went off to college, and when her career began.

“We had a good life together, up through her first marriage and her move to Canada. Then a new story begins!

“It’s kind of like ‘What happened to my baby girl’.”
