Meghan Markle discusses ‘very intimate’ Suits scene in 2013

It’s been one-year since Meghan and Harry formally announced their decision to “step back” from their duties as senior roles within the Royal Family. Queen Elizabeth II and other royals were due to conduct a review of the ‘Megxit’ deal but it was cancelled after they were said to be happy with the current arrangement. The decision comes amid the couple’s bid to become financially self-sufficient by brokering deals with Netflix and Spotify, reportedly for £81million and £29million respectively.

One of Meghan and Harry’s long-standing critics has been Mr Morgan who has given the couple countless verbal lashing on Good Morning Britain and Twitter.

Most recently, the ITV host referred to them as “ginge and cringe” in a frustrated rant about them featuring son Archie Harrison on their Spotify podcast.

The Queen’s great-grandson, who turns two in May, gave his “first public speech” on the debut episode of Archewell Audio, which was released in December.

On the podcast’s “Holiday Special”, the youngster tried to tell listeners “Happy New Year” while being coached by Meghan and Harry.

The decision to include Archie furthered Mr Morgan’s fury, who accused them of “using him to flog” their podcast after claiming that they wanted to “protect his privacy”.

In April last year, the Sussexes’ sent a letter to four British newspapers “banning” them from access to their lives.

Mr Morgan also took affront to what he interpreted as them using their royal titles to leverage deals with Netflix and Spotify.

On GMB, he said: “It all comes down to the same thing, would Spotify have given them two quid for this podcast if they weren’t the Duke and Duchess of Sussex?

“They wouldn’t have the profile if they weren’t members of the Royal Family.

“It is completely inappropriate for members of the Royal Family to fleece commercial entities in this way.”

Last year in his book, Wake Up: Why The World Has Gone Nuts, Mr Morgan accused Harry of “abandoning his family” to live a “vacuous new life of pampered self-indulgence”.

He also was infuriated by the couple’s decision to move into an £11million estate in California, near Los Angeles, which he dubbed: “The paparazzi epicentre of the world.”

Mr Morgan has come under fire for his views on the royal couple but has remained adamant that their actions were to blame for his rants.

In June last year, he tweeted: “People say I’m too critical of Meghan Markle.

“But she ditched her family, ditched her Dad, ditched most of her old friends, split Harry from William [and] has now split him from the Royal Family. I rest my case.”

However, in a rare U-turn about the onslaught of verbal attacks, Mr Morgan appeared to express remorse for his actions and felt he could have been wrong.

In May last year, Sunday Times journalist Decca Aitkenhead told him that his rants about the royals have “made him look ugly” and asked: “With hindsight, would he have dialled any of it down?”

In what was described as a “softly” spoken response, Mr Morgan said: “Yeah, probably, I think that’s a perfectly fair criticism.”

Ms Aitkenhead also suggested that his “vendetta against Meghan” might have been conducted “in revenge for her dropping their modest friendship” after she met Harry.

While Mr Morgan did not confirm or deny the statement, he said: “It’s probably not wise, if you’re a columnist, to make things too personal.

“Have I taken things a bit too far? Probably. Do I think that will govern and temper how I talk about them going forward? Absolutely.”

While Mr Morgan appeared to be regretful last year, he seems to have ramped-up his criticisms of Harry and Meghan rather than reducing them.

In a surprising confession, he admitted that his angry outbursts were often down to “boredom” when asked about “the single greatest lesson he had learned from lockdown”.

Mr Morgan said: “I’ve been at my best as a journalist on stuff that really matters.

“It’s the stuff that is substantial, particularly when people’s lives are at stake, that seems to galvanise my personality into the best possible place.

“And it’s times of relative peace, calm, quiet and dare I say boredom that might occasionally bring out the worst in me.

“Having squabbles with people who are never going to change their mind in a million years about stuff that no longer seems remotely important.”

The launch of the website for Meghan and Harry’s non-profit organisation Archewell – taken from the words for strength and action – left Mr Morgan fuming again.

In an introduction to their website, they wrote: “We believe in the best of humanity. Because we have seen the best of humanity.

“We have experienced compassion and kindness, from our mothers and strangers alike.”

When the news broke, Mr Morgan tweeted: “Sadly, Ginge & Cringe’s ‘compassion’ and ‘humanity’ doesn’t extend to either of their fathers both of whom have been airbrushed out of this nauseating bilge.”

After the reference to Thomas Markle Sr and Prince Charles, Mr Morgan signed off the tweet with three emojis showing someone being sick.

In another rant after an insider told People magazine that “it was always their dream to be financially independent”, the TV star accused them of “unprecedented greed”.

In a tweet to his 7.7 million followers, Mr Morgan wrote: “They haven’t changed the Royal Family one iota.

“They’ve just exploited their royal titles in an unprecedentedly greedy, shameless way from their Californian mansion as the real royals quietly & stoically did their duty in the UK during the pandemic.”

One Twitter user replied: “You really don’t like them, Piers, do you?”, to which, the star bluntly answered: “No.”

He continued: “I think they’re a pair of vapid little wastrels exploiting their royal titles for vast commercial gain whilst doing none of the duty that being a member of the Royal Family entails.”

Piers Morgan’s book Wake Up: Why The World Has Gone Nuts was released by HarperCollins in October last year. It is available here.
