Meghan and Harry are just months into their new lives away from the spotlight of the royal frontline. They have moved to Santa Barbara, in California, signed a megawatt deal with Netflix to produce documentaries and paid off their Frogmore Cottage renovation costs — meaning they have had plenty to celebrate. And if last year’s present is anything to go by, Meghan will have organised something extraordinary for Harry’s 36th birthday, despite the restrictions of the ongoing pandemic.

A source claimed: “Last year, for Harry’s birthday, Meghan recreated their Botswana camping adventures in their backyard.

“It’s a place that means so much to them — and to Harry in particular — so Meghan wanted to bring that happy place to him on his day so she set up a tent, got sleeping bags, cooked dinner and recreated Botswana where they fell in love.”

The couple first headed to Botswana after only two dates together, back in 2016.

Harry admitted in their 2017 engagement interview this was a pivotal moment in their relationship.

He told the interviewer: “Then it was I think about three, maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana.

“And we camped out with each other under the stars. She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic.”

The sympathetic new biography, ‘Finding Freedom’ by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand also suggested Harry knew Meghan was the right woman for him after their Botswana trip.

The authors explained: “Harry was delightfully surprised by Meghan’s down-to-earth attitude.

The book claimed Harry’s relationship with William began to falter “shortly before the couple became secretly engaged in August 2017”.

Botswana has been close to Harry’s heart ever since Princess Diana died, as that is where Prince Charles decided to take his two sons to help them cope with their grief.

While it is not yet known what Meghan has planned for Harry’s birthday this year, the Duke of Sussex did make it clear what he thought about his special day.

During a joint video call with the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, Harry complimented the youth leaders for their work.

He explained that the platform was used for “you guys” to “make the world a better place”, before adding: “I say ‘you’, I want to include us, but I already feel as if I’m way too old…”

Meghan interrupted: “You’ve got to stop! You’re not too old!”

The Duchess of Sussex is three years older than her husband and celebrated her 39th birthday in August.
