Scottish Conservative Party leader Douglas Ross took aim at Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP for their failures in education over the years. While speaking on the BBC, Mr Ross insisted that he and the Conservative Party welcomed the U-turn on the downgraded exam result children had received. Scotland’s Education Secretary John Swinney apologised to students today and insisted that the thousands of children who saw their exam results downgraded due to coronavirus would have them reissued and awarded grades based solely on their teachers’ judgement.

Mr Ross said: “The apologies are not enough from Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP.

“For the last week John Swinney, Nicola Sturgeon and almost every SNP politician in Scotland has said they had to have this moderation and the downgrading of the marks was correct.

“125,000 students across Scotland, 1 in 4, had their marks lowered because John Swinney himself said the direction his Government gave to the Scottish Qualifications Authority lead to this.

“While he has made this U-turn today and clearly responded to the outcries from teachers, parents and students this week, he was deaf to it for most of this week.

“This is the latest in a long line of failures by the SNP Scottish Government on education in Scotland.”
