Prince Charles discusses ‘interference’ in his life in 1994

Prince Charles “did what he had to do” and chose duty over love by marrying the late Princess of Wales in 1981, relationship expert Karen Mooney has said. However, this move brought a great deal of sadness and unhappiness upon both Charles and Diana who had “nothing in common whatsoever”, the expert noted.

Ms Mooney, founder and MD of Sara Eden Introductions, told Express.co.uk: “I think he has been a victim of the process.

“Unfortunately the Royal Family in those days had to follow tradition, and he clearly loved Camilla but wasn’t allowed to marry her.”

In a bid to abide by the traditions a Prince of Wales of the Royal Family was still expected to follow in the 1980s, Prince Charles cast aside his feelings for the now-Duchess of Cornwall and tied the knot with Princess Diana.

Ms Mooney added: “He married someone who was 13 years his junior, with nothing in common.

“They literally had known each other for a few months, were at completely different life stages and didn’t share any interest, hobbies or common sense even.”

The expert branded this union a “recipe for disaster” – which eventually ended up in a very public separation in 1992 and divorce in 1996.

She continued: “There was nothing in common whatsoever – it was a recipe for disaster from beginning to end.

“He did what he had to do, which was to marry and have two sons very quickly after their nuptials.

“It was soon into the marriage when they both realised it was not going to last.

“She craved love and attention and he was still in love with Camilla – and has loved her all his life.

“All I can say is that I am very pleased to see that at last, they are happy now.”

Prince Charles and Camilla made their relationship official in 1999, when the couple left the Ritz in London together after having attended the Duchess’ sister’s birthday bash.

By then, Camilla had already met Charles’s two sons Harry and William.

Six years later, Charles and Camilla finally tied the knot, with the bride assuming the title of Duchess of Cornwall.

Camilla has since become a key member of the Royal Family and one of the hardest-working.

The Royal Family’s acceptance of Camilla was cemented in 2012, when the Queen appointed Camilla to the highest female rank in the Royal Victorian Order.

This personal gift, awarded on the seventh wedding anniversary of the Duchess and Prince Charles, was given in recognition of “personal” service to the monarchy.

The relationship expert also touched upon the most recent portrayal on TV of Prince Charles in Netflix’s The Crown, the expert said: “And to speak about The Crown, I think they are being very cruel to Charles.”

The fourth season of the popular Netflix show portrays events taking place between 1979 and 1990.

Prince Charles and Diana’s marriage and his relationship with Camilla are featured prominently.

In the show, the Prince of Wales does not appear to interrupt his affair with Camilla and often lashes out at Princess Diana, showing open disdain for his young wife.

However, royal author Sally Bedell Smith has previously claimed this depiction of the trio is filled with inaccuracies.

The expert, who authored a biography of Prince Charles, believes the Prince of Wales interrupted his affair with Camilla between 1981 and 1986 and entered his marriage with the intention to make it work.

The royal author told Vanity Fair: “Charles actually appreciated Diana’s quick wit; during the engagement, he wrote to his grandmother about how funny Diana was.”
