Prince Harry and Meghan Markle urged Americans to vote in the upcoming Presidential election in a clip shared by Time 100 this week. The video prompted a backlash as the pair were criticised for wading into US politics but a royal expert has claimed Prince Harry would never involve himself in UK political matters.

Richard Fitzwilliams, a leading royal commentator, has said Prince Harry would continue to stay silent on British politics.

When asked if he thought the Duke would ever consider voting in UK election, the expert told Express.co.uk: “No, I’m sure he wouldn’t dream of interfering or voting in the British election because that would be something that he as the Duke of Sussex, as a member of the Royal Family and as sixth in line to the throne, would not be expected to do.

“I don’t think that he wishes to cause controversy in that way.”

Mr Fitzwilliams also believed Prince Harry would not publicly discuss UK political matters in the future.

He said: “No, I’m sure he wouldn’t and I don’t think there’s anything to lead us to the conclusion that he would because.

“Firstly because trouble would be needless.”

It is considered sacrosanct for members of the Royal Family to remain apolitical, never voting or stating a political allegiance.

But the royal expert said Meghan has “every right” to encourage Americans to vote and did not consider the recent video to be controversial.

The Duchess said: “Every four years we are told the same thing, that this is the most important election of our lifetime. But this one is.

“When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard.”

Harry said he was not able to vote in the election because he is not a US citizen but he urged Americans to “reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity”.

He also said he was been unable to vote in UK elections due to being a member of the Royal Family.

Mr Fitzwilliams thinks Meghan could well go into politics in the future.

He said: “Looking very broadly to the future, we know what she believes, we know she would be an ideal Democratic Party Congresswoman, or perhaps even higher who knows.”

The commentator conceded it was too early to predict her true intentions, but that running for office is “a distinct possibility”.
