The Queen, 94, passed on two patronages to Meghan Markle, 39, – The National Theatre and The Association of Commonwealth Universities – before she stepped down as a senior royal with Prince Harry in March 2020. Royal commentator Richard Eden has claimed that the Duchess of Sussex “did absolutely nothing” for the theatre. He is now suggesting that Prince Edward or Sophie Wessex should receive the patronage instead.

Mr Eden told Palace Confidential on MailPlus: “Sophie has been described as the Royal Family’s secret weapon.

“I think she shouldn’t be so secret anymore.

“We do want to hear a bit more from her and with Edward as well.

“The Queen kindy handed over her patronage of the Royal National Theatre to Meghan and then she promptly moved to American and did absolutely nothing for the theatre.

“Why not hand that to Prince Edward?

“He used to actually work for Andrew Lloyd-Webber. He would love it.

“He would be fantastic and so would Sophie who used to come from a PR background.

“I really think she’s not used as much as she should be.”

“It will also involve Harry’s military links such as, Captain-General of the Royal Marines which he greatly prizes and they have been kept vacant.

“It’s, therefore, possible that they might be returned to him.

“At the moment, he is in a position as a veteran and someone who founded the Invictus Games for wounded servicemen and women, he’s not able to wear the uniform.

“I think he really prizes his links with the military and clarity on these points is something we will get in due course.”
