The Second World War veteran, who captured hearts in April by walking 100 laps of his garden, raising £33million for the NHS, said the older generation will start to feel lonely should the toughest coronavirus restrictions return.

He told radio station LBC: “I am afraid it would be, let’s just say unpleasant, for older people. They are virtually imprisoned in their own premises.

“While we continue with the lockdown, people are going to be more isolated this is going to be very, very bad for old people.”

Sir Tom, 100, also said it wouldn’t just be the elderly who would be impacted but a “very serious situation for all of us”.
