Every week Public Health England (PHE) publishes its report on coronavirus activity in England. According to the latest report, published earlier this week, COVID-19 surveillance indicators suggest England has recorded “a small increase in COVID-19 activity at a national level”. When coronavirus cases in an area become too high, the Government has not hesitated to place areas under a local lockdown.

Where is on the brink of a local lockdown?

PHE published its most recent coronavirus surveillance report on August 21, detailing which regions are included on its watch list for coronavirus cases.

The results are based on data from August 10 to August 16, 2020, and available daily data up to August 18, 2020.

The following local authorities have been included in the watchlist: Oldham, Blackburn with Darwen, Pendle, Leicester, Bradford, Manchester, Rochdale, Hyndburn, Calderdale, Preston, Burnley, Kirklees, Salford, Tameside, Bury, Trafford, Bolton, Stockport, Northampton, Birmingham, Luton, Swindon, Newark and Sherwood, Sandwell, Oadby and Wigston, Slough, Wakefield, Peterborough.

Areas of intervention include Oldham, Blackburn with Darwen, Pendle, Leicester, Bradford, Manchester, Rochdale, Hyndburn, Calderdale, Preston, Burnley, Kirklees, Salford, Tameside, Bury, Trafford, Bolton, Stockport, Northampton.

Northampton recorded the highest incidence rate per 100,000 population in this week’s report with 125.3, but PHE state this was “almost solely down to a workplace outbreak at the Greencore Factory”.

Regions considered areas of concern or areas of enhanced support could potentially be raised to areas of intervention, meaning local lockdowns could be implemented if cases continue to increase.

By this reasoning, according to the latest PHE report nine authorities could be at risk of a local lockdown similar to ones put in place in other regions.
