Belgian royal family: Why is Prince Albert II ‘illegitimate’ daughter now Princess? | Royal | News (Reports)

The former king supplied his DNA for testing in 2019, and tests results emerged on January 27 this year.

Prince Albert recognised his daughter on the same day, and proceedings confirmed her as a princess yesterday.

Illegitimate children could claim a title before, usually a duke or duchess, but the newly dubbed princess became Her Royal Highness (HRH).

Non-royals becoming an HRH is uncommon, so the latest news surprised many, but a law change run 1991 gave all of Albert’s children right to claim an HRH title, whether born our of marriage or not.
