Dr Laurence Buckman, the former chairman of the BMA’s GP committee, insisted the NHS is in very good shape and organised amid the coronavirus pandemic. While speaking on TalkRadio with Mike Graham, Dr Buckman admitted he had doubts the UK would even see a second coronavirus wave this winter. He attributed this scepticism to the UK’s success in reducing the number of transmissions over the past few months.

Mr Graham said: “How is the NHS as far as the COVID-19 situation at the moment?

“It seems to have weathered the storm.

“There are those that say a second wave is coming and those that say there might not be, nobody is quite sure.

“At the moment it seems as if the NHS is in good shape, isn’t it?”

Dr Buckman agreed and replied: “The NHS is in very good shape.

“The emergency COVID-19 service assess patients from all over the country.”

Dr Buckman noted that despite this, there are multiple clusters across the country and significant changes in the patterns of infection.

He said: “There is no doubt that there are definite clusters, we are seeing cases in children, not particularly sick ones, there also seems to be a rise amongst younger people, therefore a fall in the death rate.

“I think we may have squashed it so flat that we are now just looking at outbreaks.”

The health expert also reflected on one of his biggest fears going into a potential second wave.

He said: “The worry is you get an outbreak in a food factory, like if 300 people get it one go in Northhampton.

“That is very alarming, if you could do it to 300 people, that 300 could meet another 300 people and suddenly you have a massive outbreak and then you risk older people.”
