“And all the time we must be vigilant and do what it takes to tackle any new variants that arise. For now, the most important thing that you can do is get the jab when the time comes, stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.”

Mr Hancock said on Monday people can now contact the NHS for their vaccine if they have not already been offered one.

Previously, those in the groups being called up to be vaccinated were urged to wait their turn by awaiting confirmation by the NHS inviting them to come forward and book an appointment.

He said: “If you live in England and are 70 and over and have not yet got an appointment to be vaccinated then please contact the NHS.”
